Here I share five amazing books, some of the best books on yoga that I’m sure you’ll enjoy, and that will level up your yoga skills. These vary from more introductory to more complex, so choose the ones that resonate with your journey right now.

Bringing Yoga to Life: The Everyday Practice of Enlightened Living by Donna Farhi

This is an oldie but goodie. Donna lets you take your yoga practice beyond the mat and into your everyday life, creating a complete, practical philosophy for daily living. She expands on the teachings of Patanjali’s Yoga Sutras, the core text of the yoga tradition, and how the philosophy of yoga is a path to a deeper awareness of self. One of the first books I read on yoga, that to this day still holds a place in my heart.

Best books on yoga - The inner traditions of yoga book cover

The Inner Tradition of Yoga: A Guide to Yoga Philosophy for the Contemporary Practitioner by Michael Stone.

I found myself in a yoga class alongside Michael once. Talking with him it was clear that he was a wise and kind man, and I was saddened to hear of his passing in 2017. In this book, he makes the spiritual and ethical teachings of the yogic tradition immediately relatable to your yoga practice, providing you with a clear explanation of yogic philosophy, along with teachings on how to bring your understanding of yoga theory to deeper levels through your practice.

It’s a unique evidence-based exploration into the complexities of human movement and what a safe, effective yoga practice entails. Yoga is examined through a biomechanist’s lens and its role in your musculoskeletal health. It deals with pose modifications in the context of load management, injury, and the robustness and resilience of the human body.

Best books on yoga - Move Your DNA book cover

Move Your DNA: Restore Your Health Through Natural Movement by Katy Bowman.

This book is actually not specifically about yoga, but a celebration of the fact your body was made for movement. Katy is extremely knowledgeable and has written a great book here on why you should move more. If you’re interested in going into the how and why behind movement (it’s a bit heavy on detailed information) this is the book for you. Many ailments can be alleviated by moving your body part more, like we do in yoga where all our body parts get to stretch and work.
